Frequently Asked Questions

What happens once I apply?
  • Discernment is a step by step process. Once you submit an application with us, we will be in contact with you within the next two weeks. We encourage you to commit to daily prayer and talk to the Lord about your discernment, as well as confide in trusted faithful wise friends and a Spiritual Director for further guidance. If you get invited to a Recruitment Weekend, that will be the next step!
  • Missionaries raise their full support from individuals and families through what we call Mission Partner Development. We aim to develop relationships with all of our supporters in which we can help them grow deeper in their relationship with Christ. On campus, we “give by going”. Our supporters are able to “go by giving.”
  • We receive incredible training and resources to prepare us to fundraise, beginning with in-depth training at our New Staff Training in May & June. We are taught best practices in how to invite someone to join the mission through their support.  We also receive training on how to budget and set a support goal that enables us to meet our individual needs.
  • The dating fast allows missionaries to be radically available to serve and further the mission on campus, to be an opportunity for deep spiritual growth and development of a complete dependence on God alone, a time for vocational discernment, and an opportunity to look upon our brothers and sisters in a non-romantic way and love with freedom of heart.
  • The dating fast is a missionary’s 12-month commitment to refrain from romantic relationships during their first year on staff. This can be lived out in 3 ways: if a missionary is not already in an exclusive relationship, then he or she refrains from entering a romantic relationship. If a missionary is already in an exclusive relationship, the couple is asked to take a significant step back in their communication and interaction. If the missionary is engaged or married, no dating fast is observed.
  • Missionaries make a commitment to serve on any campus where FOCUS has a program. Placement of missionaries is based on a variety of factors including: strengths, interests, abilities, and background. FOCUS strives to build teams that are well-rounded and can meet the needs of a campus ministry program. In addition, FOCUS desires to place individuals with teammates who will help them grow spiritually and professionally and to help them execute greater heights of successful Christian leadership.
  • We encourage our missionaries to put their placement completely in God’s hands, knowing that He loves them and will provide for them wherever they go. He knows you and your needs and has a specific place in mind for you!
  • The Freedom Project exists to help female and male missionaries and students overcome obstacles in Chastity, Sobriety, and Excellence – equipping them to live in true freedom and confidently guide others toward the same.
  • The Bosco Project is an exclusive opportunity, reserved for select first-year male missionaries who show tremendous potential but would benefit from an additional year of high-impact formation and brotherhood. While serving as FOCUS missionaries, Bosco men receive:
    • Personal mentorship from seasoned formators
    • A structured Rule of Life to build discipline and virtue
    • Intentional brotherhood with other men on mission with FOCUS
    • Deep spiritual and human formation to prepare them for mission
    • This is not just another program—it’s an investment in you. If you are serious about growing into the man God is calling you to be, and if you are willing to commit to an intense year of growth, then Bosco may be the opportunity God has for you.
  • FOCUS is committed to a comprehensive employee benefits program that helps our employees stay healthy, feel secure, and maintain a work/life balance. FOCUS is proud of the benefits program offered to its employees. The investment we make toward your benefits program is an investment in you.
  • FOCUS offers medical, dental, and vision insurance, along with a plethora of other benefits. These include, but are not limited to, a 403(b), hospital/accident indemnity insurance, life insurance, long-term disability insurance, and the option to open an HSA if the employee elects our health insurance.
  • Serving as a FOCUS missionary is an initial two-year commitment. We have staff members who have been serving FOCUS for more than 10 years, most missionaries serve on staff for 3-4 years. The formation you receive as a missionary includes professional, spiritual, and human development opportunities that are invaluable to future employers.
  • FOCUS has helped missionaries receive deferrals to many different graduate study programs (including medical school and law school) if needed.
  • These are initiatives within FOCUS to outreach to specific groups of students.
  • FOCUS Greek: outreach to sorority men and women. Many of them being Greek themselves, they are returning to campus to help change the Greek culture, challenging these student leaders to turn away from some of the darker influences on campus to answer a higher calling
  • Varsity Catholic: outreach to student athletes. Varsity Catholic works to serve college athletes who are searching for Christ. The goal is to help them realize that their deepest identity is in Christ and the God who created them.
